Description
Here it is a portrait I've painting in the past two days. It is Rudolf II, holy roman emperor, nephew of Philip II of Spain and son of Maximilian II. He is depicted following the Hans von Aachen's portrait and the background is the Prague's Royal Castle as it could be seen in the begginings of XVIIth century (I used as reference several engravings of that time), without the later rebuilds. Prague was the emperor's capital and the castle was his oficial residence and seat of power. Rudolf was trully an eccentric, he was a patron of art and science but also of ocultism, astrology and alchemy. He was a feeble politician and in the end he was deposed by his detested brother, Matthias, who crowned himself emperor, leaving Rudolf in seclution until his demise. A trully fascinating character.
