Aegon V and Duncan the Small

Description

"The Prince of Dragonflies loved Jenny of Oldstones so much he cast aside a crown, and Westeros paid the price in corpses"

Aegon V married Betha Blackwood, a woman as wilfull and stubborn as he was, and their eldest son couldn't be otherwise. He fell in love with a certain commoner girl from the Riverlands, married her in secret and spurned his betrothed, Lyonel Baratheon's daughter. His decision would bring great sorrow, for he renounced to his regal status, angered his would-be father-in-law and encouraged his younger brother, Jaehaerys to marry their sister, Shaera. Lastly, that marriage would be terrible, as incest was committed again, messing with the bloodline and leading to the utter insanity of Aegon V's grandson: Aerys II.

English fashion of the XIV century was used as reference for this one, specially the robes worn by Edward III's effigy at his burial in Westminster Abbey were specially useful to design Aegon's outfit. I added small details all around the place: a sealed contract, probably concerning the marriage of Duncan and the Baratheon Lady; a discarded ring on the table, symbol of broken promises and marriages; a courtly love scene on the tapestry with the man giving his heart to his beloved, an act of love and not of politics; a dragonfly on a badge worn by heir on the belt; a marriage chest or "cassone", used to storage fine clothes and other items part of the bride's dowry...

Duncan is young and bold, with a thin, still growing beard symbol of his youth and rebellion: he's a man trying to become one. Aegon is still lean and handsome, but time and hardships have hardened his features. His body is that of a man frequently on the saddle, quelling rebellions and uprisings. Duncan the Tall wears an intricate armor, fitting for the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and the white cloak falls from his broad shoulders; he's still the commoner, Flea Bottom boy, something we can glance in his hard features, but he's not a trunk anymore, but older and experienced, as the King himself.

Targaryen's history is above all a family drama, of betrayal, lust and ambition, and this is but a chapter of that story.
